Received Friday, 1 a.m. CAPETOWN, March 23. The newspaper "Volkstein" records that a violent debate took place at the Nationalist caucus over the question of South Africa's status. One section declared that if Hertzog was satisfied with the result of the Imperial Conference, they were not. Hertzog made an excited reply and the caucus adopted a resolution acknowledging that what he had obtained was satisfactory and regarded it as a stepping i stone on the road to freedom. i The paper adds that this explains Hertzog's subsequent speech in Parliament regarding the Imperial Conference when he stressed the right of a Dominion to withdraw from the Empire when they saw it was in their interest to do so; also that of de Waal a prominent Cape Nationalist, when he declared that he still cherished the ideal of a republic.
