LONDON, March 16^ Tlie' surprising total of £80,561 was obtained from the sale of the Russian State jewels, dcscrihed as tlie rarest collection of gems hought in an auction room. ^ They mostly date from tlie eighteenth century, and tlicrefore helong to a period removed from the late reigning faniily, though thc Nuptial Crown was nsed more recently in ceremonial functioiis. Tliere was a terrific rush, mostly of women, and after spirited bidding the crown went to a Paris bnyer for £6100, bidding opening at £5000. Loss important lots grouped together brought £8000. Other prices were. Pair of diamoncl bracelets, £3400; diamoncl neclclace, £2700; j green jasper snufFbox, £2600; em- 1 ! erald and brilliant. ornament, £4300 ; j | large oval brilliant £11,800; diamond, sapphire and pearl brooch, ' £7300; diamoncl tiara, £4200; court sword, £700.
