HIGH SCHOOL BOARD.
Ihe quarteriy meetmg or rne xiign Scliool Board . of Governors was held bn A'fondav night. There were present — Messrs . Fitch (chairman), G. J. Shackleton, AVm. Stewart, AVm. Lindsay, H. Whatman, and AV. E. Eyans. MEMBERS' APPOINTMENTS. The re-appointments for the next fwo years were no.tified as follows : — Ganterbnry College, Mr W. E. Evans; Borough Council, Mr F. Nash ; County Council, Mr AV. 'Stewart. HECTOR' S REPORT. I Mr L. F Pegler, rectov, read tlie foljowing report Roll at beginning of ' February 123, admitted since 4, withdrawn 2; present roll 125. Of tbis roll, new sehotlars ; are 62; average attendance 113. Both tbe roll and the average attendance are records for the school. ' > Mr M. P. Lyng, who took up 1ns duties on 1st February , as junior master, has some 30 boys in the Pipe Band Hall. School success. — Again we have to note a very successful list of passes in examinations. (A comprehensive list of passes was appended.) - 'Tn concluding my final report," said Mr Pegler, "1 wish to express' to^ you and your Board my appreciation of the very considerate* treatment I have experienced at your- liands during my three years' tenure of the position of rector, and to express the hope tliat "n the near future the AVaimate High Sohool Board will he empowered to 'ake full charge of the secondarv education in the - Waimate district." The chairman congi*atulated the rector on his last report, and said that it was very encoui'aging to have new masters take charge of the school with new ideas. The rector had.revived the cadets, and the speaker said that t]ie Waimate District High School held their own this year witli examination resnlts. It was proposed by Mr Stewart : "That the committee convey to Mr Pegler their appreciation of his very fine work." — Carried nnanimously. VISIT OF MINISTER. It was stated in regard to the visit to Waimate of the Minister of Education on 4th April, that the Mayor (Mr G. Dash) had been conimunicated with, and had replied tliat 'he wonld do anvthing that the Board wislied ip the way of l'eception. It was decided to leave the matter in the hands of the Borough Council. Mr Fitch thought that all memhers shoukl take the opportunity to meet the Minister and liave a round table conference with him. Mr Lindsay moved that a committee of town memhers he appointed to meet the Minister. — Carried. The seeretary reported that the funds had increased from £3764 to £3962 to. 31st December, 1926. Accounts amounting to £29 12s 4d weri passed for payment. The chairman proposed that the Board write congratulating Mr T. B. Strong, an old Waimate hoy, on his appointment to the position of Diredfcor of Education. — Agreed to.
HEADMASTER'S RESIGNATION. After the rectoir's resignation was read, Mr Fitch said that all members of the Board and everyone else thought that Mr Pegler had been a very capable master. He moved that his resignation he accepted with much regret.. Mr Shackleton said that the number of pupils that had passed examinaoions proved that only by the hard work of the masters' and the very capable direction of the lieadmaster could this very satisfactory result be brought about. Mr AVhatman agreed with what the previous speakers had said with regard to Mr Pegler' s sterling qualities as reetor, and he wished' to add that during his term of office Mr Pegler had given great help to the Board In their work. Mr Stewart said tliat not only as a scholar, but as a citizen, Mr Pegler had won tbe esteem and respect cf every citizen. Mr AV. E. Evans sclid he wonld have liked Mr Pegler to have. remained until the separate High School was functioning, but as he was going to, accept promotion he extended the rector his best wishes for his future success. Mr Lindsay also eulogised. the wcjrk the lieadmaster had done, and wished to personally tliank him for all he had done. Mr Pegler replied that he could onlv repeat the concluding paragraph of his letter of resignation. He was certainlv accepting a liiglier grade position, and wonld in future have something to do 'witli the control of coming teachers. He was not anxious to get away from the school. and it was only private reasons wliich cansed him to wish to get baok to the citv. He ihanked the ' Board for tbeir kindly interest; not once .had his reqnests been refused.
