labor and in the introduction of fish, opossums, etc. We boughb 2000 Rainbow trout from the Wellington Society ; they have done well, and a portion have been liberated in tho Otopopo river, and the remainder will be distributed shortly in other streams. Wo have also a quantity of American brook trout and Scotch burn trout ready for distribution. Wo obtaiucd six opossums from the Southland Socioty, and liberated them in tho bush at Birchwood. If these succeed und increase they will bo very valuablo in tho future. The red deer aro increasing in number, nud spreading rapidly over the back-country from Longslip to Lake Oh«ui. Whon in sufficienb numbers wo will bo able to issue licenses for deer shooting in our district. Wo regret that both nativo and imported game are fasb disappearing in the vicicnty of Oatnaru, and attribute this to the prevalence of laying poisonod grain, and also to the action of ferrets, stoats, and woasols introduced for the extermination of rabbits. We havo senb homo bo' tho Field newspaper a shipment) of frozen trout for scientific purposes, with a view of ! getting from experts an authoritative opin on as to their nature ; we propose to rep/ab this oxperimenb next year. In order to encourage anglers bhe Society bag given pr zos for angling competitions. A petition was presented to the Government to geb the rooubh of bhe river Waitaki opened for nebtinp. In the interests of tbo distaict*, bho anglers, and also of tho Maoris a largely signed counter petibion was forwarded to the Government poinbing out how detrimental netting in the mouth of the Waitaki would be to all concerned, und ihe Government has determined to take no further action 'n the matter.
