Mr Bragato, Viotomn Government vitioulurist, givealucture this evening under t ho au"p ces of the Chamber of Cominorce, on the suitability of Central 0 ago for vinecul'urp. A committee was appointed *o see what steps should be taken to utilise the information given. Tho Hon. Mr Gasman paid a vibib to the coal mines at Green Island this morning. In ihe afternoon he received deputations. One of tliose was from tho coal merchants, requesting an alteration of tho charges for tho curiago of coal on tho railways. Captain Fox pointed out that Newcastle coal for the first ton inilos wia chaiged Ss 6d per ton, for 60 miles 10a Bd, and for 100 miles 13y. Tho charges for West Co*st cokl for tho same distances wero 2s Gd, 8* 41, and 10s 2d. Mr Ciulman said ho could hold out no hope of an alteration being made. Instead of tho Arawa miking tho return trip to San Francisco her place will bo taken by tho Monowai, which was withdrawn to take tho Wairarapa's place. Tho summer season being over tho Monowai is again available. It is probable that sho will bo withdrawn again nexh summer, the Arawa again taking her placo. One of the deputations to Mr Cid man w»d fiom the Otago University, who desired to lnve tho grant of L 506 to tha School of Mines placed on a mure satisfactory footing The Minister promised to consider tho matter, bub desired to sea tho agreements with tho professors, to Beo whothei tho Council could not effeob reductions, In roply to a deputation, who usked for assistance in getting erected, in connection with tho School of, Mines pr.iper, a testing apparatus in which tho cyanide process could bo used, the Minister expressed himself favorable, bub mid that ho would bring this and other malteis in connection with the goldfields before tho C-tbinei.
