OAMARU SCHOOLS COMMITTEE.
A meeting of this Committee took place last evening. Present, — Messrs Steward (ohair), N. Fleming, Gibbs, Headland, Falconer, and tho Secretary. The Rector (Mr Peattie), Mr llice (South School), and Mr Fleming (North School) were also in attendance. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed, and the outward correspondence was read ahd approved. A letter was read from the Education Board, with reference to the salary of the Music Master and Drill Instructor. It was resolved that the Chairman and Secretary communicate with the new Board on this subj set ; also as to some provision for cleaning tho sohools, fuel, and contingent expenses. A letter was read from tho Board, declining to advance Ll5O for the repairs to the Rector's residence as follows :—: — Education Office, Dunedin, 29th April, 1878. Sir, — I have tho honor to inform you that your letter of the 6th inst., asking for the ■urn of Ll5O out of the capitation money due to the Committee for repairs to the Rector's residence was considered at a meeting of the Board- held on the 24th inst., when it was decided to decline the request. I may mention that there is no capitation money due to your Committee. Tho salaries of tho teachers will be paid according to a fixed scale. An allowance will be paid quarterly to meet current expenses, ana, as already intimated, a sum of LI 200 has baon granted for buildings. These three items constitute all tho claims which the Baard can at tho present time recognise. I have the honor, &c, P. S. Pryde, Interim Secretary of Education Board. Mr John Hardy, Oamaru. Much dissatisfaction was expressed at this communication, and a discussion followed as to the desirability of agitating for a separate Board. It was resolved that the Chairman, Messrs Fleming, Falconor, and Gibbs be a Sub-Committee to enquire into the matter, and to report to the Committee on the subject. The following letter was also read :—: — Education Offico, Dunedin, Ist May, 1878. Sir, — I have the honor to inform you that your letter of the 26th March, submitting the recommeudation of the Committee with reference to the distribution of grant of LI 2OO for additional school accommodation, was considered at a mooting of the Education Board hold yesterday. The Board agreed to adopt tho recommendations made by the Committee, tho plans in each case to bo submitted to the Board for approval, before the Committee will bo at liberty to advertise for tenders. I am directed to atato that the Board will not recognise any claim for architects' fees, preparation of plans, &c, and that any expenditure which the Committee may incur ovor and above the sum of Ll2OO must be paid by tho district.— l have, &c, P. S. Prydk, Interim Secretary Education Board. Mr John Hardy, Secretary School Committee, Oamaru. It was resolved that the Board be written to, asking the reconsideration of the matter. A letter was also road from tho Board, intimating that they purposed removing Miss Ferons from the North School to tho Grammar School, and to transfer one of tho Grammar School pupil teachers to the North School. It was resolved that tho Committee offers no objection to the proposal. THK GRAMMAR SCHOOL. The Rector read tho following report: — High School, Oamaru, 10th May, 1878. Gentlemen,— l have to report:— (a.) That the Infant Department of this School, under the charge of Mrs Crawford, was transferred to tho Volunteer Hall, on Tuesday, the 30th ult., and is being conducted there by her and a sufficient staff of pupil-teachers, including Miss Mary Jane Wilding, formerly propoied as a pupilteacher, and whoso appointment awaits the report of tho Inspector. (b ) That since tho Easter holidays sixtyfive pupils have been added to tho roll of tho School, of whom fifty are in the Infant Department. (c J That Miis Thomas commenced duties in the High School on Monday last, the Cth inst., and is, meantime, in charge of Standard 11. (A.) That it will be necessary for the Committee to take some steps for tho heating of the Volunteer Hall during the winter months. (c.) That several panes, long broken, and blown out by the wind, require replacing in the High School. — I am, &c, Robert Peattik, Rector. School Committee, Oamaru. The report was received. The recommendations therein, as to means of warming the Volunteer Hall, &o, were referred to the Building Committoe, to make enquiries, and to communicate with the Education Board, through tho Secretary. The Committee then adjourned.
