MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Council took place on Thursday evening. Present, His Worship the Mayor, Crs. Procter, Gibbs, Booth, Mainland, Spenco, Familton, and Headland. The minutes of last meeting were read and conGrmed, and the outward correspondence was read and approved. A lottor was read from Messrs Pirie Brothers, asking payment for land taken for waterworks, and also asking compensation for damage dono to crop through trespass of horses, the fence being insufficient. Referred to Waterworks Committee, with the Engineer, for report. I Leavo was granted to Mr W. C. Baudinot to put in a box drain to carry off storm water opposite Section 9, Block XXVIII., subject to the supervision of the Engineer. 'Also to Mr A. J. S. Headland to put in a 4in glazed pipe under the footpath opposite his promises in Wansbeck street. An application from Mr James White for a slaughterhouse license was referred to the Inspector of Nuisances for report. Loavo was granted, on the application of Mr Lemon for the erection of a grain store upon tho Harbor Board block. Also for tho following transfers of leases, viz. : — Section 10, Block 35, fronvW. J \ Smith to Thomas Morris ; Section 5, Block G2, from Frederick Watling to Vincent Bond ; Section 5. Block 7, from Thomas Richmond to William Aitken ; Section 31, Block 25, from F. H. Townsend to Robort Blair. A letter received from Mr Thomas Richmond, asking for damages for destruction of fence and " abolition" of section, was referred to the Works Committee and Engineer for report. A letter was read from the Manager of the Gasworks, pointing out that all tho rotorts were now in use, and that an addional sot would bo required before next winter. Aftor discussing the matter, it was decided to order the rotorts from England, through Messrs Bright Brothers, freight to be paid to (Ximaru. Tho Gardener reported that the fencing of tho Cape reserve for planting waa progrossing favorably. THE WATERWORKS. The report of Committee, published in yesterday's issue, was read and adopted. An application from the Engineer, for leavo to expend a further sum of Ll5O for clearing out old water-courses at the Inlet, was granted. t After somo discussion it was resolved, on tho motion of Cr Proctor, seconded by Cr Familton, that a detailed account bo prepared of all expenditure in connection with the Waterworks to 31st March last, said return to ba classified under separate headings, showing amounts paid for purchaso of land, for engineering supervision, progress payments to contractors, &c. It was further resolved that Mr Connell be written to again, requesting him at once to forward the report previously asked for as to land purchase negotiations.

STEWARD STREET. It was ordered that the Engineer be directed to cause the foot-path past the Volunteor Hall to be shingled from Thames street to Severn street.

GASWORKS COMMITTEE. This Committee reported, recommending that lamps be placed in Harbor street at Oonnell and Clowes' and Anderson and Co. 's ; and also, that a lamp be placed in Itchon street, opposite the Hull street, gfrma Thnv plan flraui.Llifl^ltAa«>

PUBLIC WORKS COMMITTEE. This Committee reported that owing to the large expense which would be involved they could not recommend the opening Up of the Town Belt road at present. They recommended that steps be taken to obtain the title of the quarry agreed to bo purchased, and also, that ft register be ordered to be prepared of all deeds, titles* and documents of a like nature relating to properties vested in the Council. Both reports were adopted. It was resolved that the Engineer be instructed to cause the alteration to be made in the footh-path necessary at the corner of Itchen and Tyne streets. Amounts (including waterworks certificate) to the amount of L 2767 were passed for payment, and the Council adjourned.
