Lecture at Kaeo.
(From a Correspondent.)
On Monday night last the Rail 0. H. Garland, of Auckland, lectured in'’ tile Methodist Church at Kaeo, to a large number. His subject was “Religion,” with illustrative recitations from Tennyson. The reverend gentleman ably showed that religion is the main foundation of true patriotism, philanthropy, reformation and heroism. The lecture was highly entertaining, the speaker reaching a height of eloquence that belongs to those /rlic not only pass through great literary depths, but who have been entrusted with much mental endowment. And the lecturer’s oratorial adaptation in reciting Tennyson, to bring the language of the Lincolnshire and the Yorkshire man before the audience, gave much pleasure. The interspersion of a quartette by the Misses and Messrs. Hare, a duet by Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Brighouse, a solo by Miss Stephenson, and a solo by Mr. E. Brighouse, added very much to the entertainment. Much thanks is due for each item. But that was not all, for the kind ladies of the church in Kaeo, ably assisted by Mr. Thos. Hayes and Mr. Chas. Nisfcet, provided a repast, for which all seemed truly thankful. A collection was taken up, and realised £212/3,' and as the object of Rev. Garland’s visit to the district was to strengthen the Home Mission Fund, the collection was given for that purpose. Altogether Kaeo contributed £4 8/- to the H.M. Fund. A lecture was also given at Mangonui, in McKay’s hall, by the Rev. Garland on Tuesday night, the collection of which went to the same fund. And on Sunday night the Rev. Mr. Garland preached to a large congregation in Kaeo, his subject being “Salvation a Free Gift.” The reverend gentleman returned to Auckland on Wednesday per the s.s. WeUington. Kaeo, 26th November, 1907.
