Gumbuyer’s License Fee.

TO THE EDITOR. Dear Sir,—Many animated discussions have taken place up here with regard to what I have heard has appeared in the “ Mangonui County Times,” with regard to gum licenses. It has been stated here •that you have advocated £lO licenses. The matter has been taken up by all the small buyers of the North, and there are now many. I am one myself. However, I have never seen the article in question, and am tnerely quoting from hearsay. I cannot say if the subject or article" was really ever published. If small gumbuver had been a subscriber his query as above would have been unnecessary. We have never in these columns advocated the raising ta £lO of gumbuyer’s license fee. In the' 6th of September issue, under the 1 leading of “ Our Politicians ” and the sub-head-ing “ Kauri Gum Industry,” we reported that “Mr. Houston asked the Government, If they will, this sessiou, introduce

an amendment to the Kauri Gum Industry Act, 1898, . . . increasing the license fee to 7/6 for special license, £l 5/for ordinary licenses, and £lO for gumbuyers’ licenses, the extra revenue from these sources to form part of County’s contribution to the Hospital and Cliantable Aid Board ?”—Ed.
