Snowflake Minstrels.
At Maagoimi.
The Snowflake Minstrel Troupe faced the footlights last Tuesday evening before a packed and enthusiastic audience. The first part of the programme consisted of negro melodies, comic songs, gags, etc. Of the performers, Mr. J. Coote, in the song “ Lily of Laguna,” was especially good, the audience demanding an encore. Mr. Hands made a decided hit in his rendering of “My Honolulu Lady,” whilst Mr. Eiehmoud, in that favonte negro melody ‘‘ Close vour Dreamy Eyes,” was warmly applauded, having’also to respond to an encore. The song “ Mandalay” was well sung by Mr. Black, the interlocutor. Mr. Wake in a breezy manner sang the comic song “Going There Every Night.” The gags and jokes bandied by the corner men were decidedly funny, a number of local celebrities forming the subject for humorous patter. A humorous sketch, “ The StoryTeller,” the characters therein being taken by Messrs. Hands, Smith and Wake, and which “brought down the house,” closed the first part. In the second pait the Misses Ballance contributed several, items, which were capitally rendered, and heartily applauded by the audience, the same remarks applying to Messrs. Richmond, Coote and Keys, in the trio “ Mulligan Guards,” which was s\rt*g.iik character. Mr. Aylett, in a whistlirjr Wo “The Mocking Bird,” was loudly lappknded, responding to an encore. Messrs' Richmond and Coote were in good voice in their respective items. A screaming farce, entitled “ Wanted a Boy,” in which Mr, Hands distinctly scored in his rendering of the part of the hoy “ Timkins,” caused much amusement. The other characters, taken by Messrs. Keys, Richmond, Smith and Black, were well sustained.
Great praise is due to the performers for the whole-hearted manner in which they worked towards making the entertainment a success. We wish also to mention that the gross proceeds go into the hospital fund, their being uo deduction whatever. The hall, piano, printing and advertising, carting, and incidental expenses, were gratis by Messrs. Garton, McKay, Wake, C. Harris, and the Cable Staff respectively. Mr. W. A. Wilton played . the accompaniments throughout the evening. The proceeds of the concert totalled £24, of which'sum £l4 were taken at the door.
Captain Farquhar very kindly lent a code of flags for decoration purposes, which helped to brighten up the hall considerably. >
