Steamer on Fire. BRISBANE, Tuesday. The German steamer Ebbing had an exciting time in the Southern Ocean, The vessel was found to be on fire at the height of a hurricune. After arduous work the crew succeeded in confining the outbreak to the forehold, and eventually extinguished it. A quantity of cargo was jettisoned* and several of the crew injur'd seas. Contempt of Parliament. PERTH, Tuesday. Drayton, editor of the Kalgoorlie “ Sun,” who was finep £SO for contempt of Parliament, has been arrested by the Sergeant-at-Arms in default of paying the fine. Homicide in Melbourne. MELBOURNE, Tuesday. A young woman namnd Hubbart lias been arrested on a charge of murdering her mother. The latter met with an accident, being thrown out of a phaeton. After being treated at the hospital the hospital, she was removed to her home. She progressed favorably, but afterwards grew worse, and the doctor suspected arsenical poisoning. The accused is a congenital dwarf. The police in course of investigation found that the accused's elder brother had died from poison in 1892, but the verdict of the coroner’s jury on that occasion was that its administration was accidental.
