LATE TELEGRAMS.
[By Wire.—AUCKLAND, Tuesday Morning, 8.33 a.m.j Throughout the colony there is great : excitement over the provision of the Shop and Offices Act (passed by Parliament last session), now in force, v hich provides for compulsory closing of nearly all the shops at 6 o’clock on days other than Saturday, and at nine on Saturday. Fruiterers, chemists, and others exempted in previous Acts are now included, and great complaints are the result. Many talk of di.-c harging assistants, in’ order to come within the Act.
A heavy westerly gale has been blowing since Sunday, but is now mpderating, The potato crop in this district is affected with blight, and great loss to growers will ensue. The plant turns black and the root turns black and got*. Many are digging half-grown, and many are not fit to dig. As a consequence potatoes have now advanced in price to about £4 a ton.
