FRUIT INSPECTON SHED
HARBOUR BOARD REFUSES EXTENSION RELAXATION OF REGULATIONS SUGGESTED At a previous meeting the Nelson Harbour Board was asked by the Internal Marketing Division to extend the fruit inspection shed at the port to facilitate the handling of fruit by rail At last night’s meeting of the board the Works and Finance Committee re commended that the board was unable to carry out any further extensions to the Port Nelson fruit inspection shed "We have been asked to put an ex tension on the shed when in our opinion the inspection of fruit should be relaxed a little, especially as it will all be consumed in the country.” said the actingchairman, Mr A. R. Kingsford. Mr J. H. Brunt: "The growers will agree with that." The chairman added that the board was in favour of fruit being inspected before it reached the wharf. The secretary. Mr H. Milner, said that a later suggestion was that the ini spection shed be opened up on the railway side and conveyors installed to take the fruit from the trucks to the shed. In a discussion it was emphasised that the board was not concerned with fruit inspection, but only with the pro 1 vision of wharf facilities. The board was willing to allow the department to alter the shed at the department's expense, subject to the approval of the works foreman. ' Mr Brunt was concerned that the new suggested arrangement of inspecting the ! fruit from trucks opposite the shed might hold up rail traffic. The Richmond station had been investigated as a po.s sible inspection depot but was not considered satisfactory. ; It was decided that the board could ! not carry out further extensions to the inspection shed but that it had no ob- ■ jection to the I.M.D. carrying out any ! internal alterations to the shed at the I department's own expense, and subject ' to the .approval of the works foreman
