NELSON HARBOUR
MONTHLY MEETING OF BOARD WHARFAGE ON t PATRIOTIC GOODS The monthly meeting of the Nelson Harbour Board last evening was attended by Messrs A. R. Kings ford (in the chair). J. H. Brunt. W. B. Griffin. H. W. Chisnall, M. McGlashen. G. Manson. C. T. Nalder. J. B. Carr, and A. E Max. The chairman, Mr A Gould, was excused from attendance. Payments amounting to £8722 14s lid were confirmed, and accounts totalling £143 9s Od were passed for payment. The Murchison County Council advised that a large proportion of local bodies being favourable it had been decided to convene a conference regarding the advancement of Nelson and Marlborough provinces, the date and location to be decided later. The Nelson Provincial Patriotic Council asked that consignments of waste paper be allowed to pass over the wharves free of charge. In reply to an inquiry the Marine Department stated that the wharf charges for waste paper could only be waived if the board altered its by-law and submitted it to the department for approval. It was pointed out by board members that altering the by-law would not meet the difficulty of the accounts already sent to the Patriotic Council. A contribution by the board equivalent to the accounts was
suggested. It was also proposed that 5 the by-law should be framed to cov- J ! ei' other patriotic efforts. When a f I member asked why the wharfinger i could not “wink at” these goods go- ' ing over the wharf the secretary. Mr 1 H. Milner, said that the auditor : would not approve, and others $ thought that it would be a dangerous precedent. J Finally it was decided to make a ! donation to the Patriotic Council equal to the charges for wharfage ? already tendered, and the prepara- ; tion of a by-law remitting wharf c lees on patriotic goods was referred f to a sub-committee. Messrs Fell and Hailey forwarded t a lease of the boat shed site to the i Sea Scouts Committee (for two c years) for execution by the board, t The New Zealand Harbour Boards’ s Industrial Union of Employers for- j warded a copy of the Magistrate’s c decision against the Lyttelton Har- j hour Board for failing to pay a boat- t man the award wages for work done t on Sundays. ~ The board decided to invest £3OOO in t the second Liberty Loan. t
