AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION

NELSON EXECUTIVE'S MEETING At the meeting of the Automobile Association Nelson) held last evening the executive decided to invest £2OO in the new Liberty Loan. The president, Mr C. M. Rout, presided at the meeting. Three new members were elected: Messrs P. V. McNabb (Nelson). F. Quested (Motueka), and J. Miller (Nelson). Accounts amounting to £IOO 17s lid were passed for payment. NO ACTION TO BE TAKEN The association received a letter from the Nelson branch of the Awake New Zealand Campaign asking for a donation towards the cost of purchasing equipment for the Home Guard and for the association’s support at a public meeting to be called in the near future. It was decided that no action be taken, it being the opinion of the executive that the matter was one for the members individually and not an expenditure which come within the scope of the executive. DRIVERS OF ARMY VEHICLES Reporting on the annual meeting

of the S.I.M.U. which he had attended. Mr C. M. Rout said there had been a fairly lengthy discussion on the question of the liability of drivers of Army vehicles. Advice that new regulations on this subject had been introduced had now been received. The secretary (Mr E. R. Neale) said that a copy should come forward On the motion of Mr W. Gould a small committee comprising Mr C. M. Rout. Dr. S. A. Gibbs and the secretary was set up to peruse these regulations, and. if they were not satisfied that they covered every eventuality, to urge the S.I.M.U. to press the matter further. OBSTRUCTIONS ON MAPUA ROAD Mr E. Fleming reported that drums placed on the road at Mapua each day to divert traffic had not been removed before dusk, making the road dangerous to travellers. It was decided to write to the Public Works Department pointing out the potential danger of this practice and asking them to have the drums removed well before dark every night MANUKA STREET SPLASH Mr B. Bishop moved that the attention of the Council be drawn to the condition of the Manuka street splash. Some time ago. he said, concrete blocks had been placed at one end of the splash to prevent erosion. Hedge clippings and garden rubbish floating down the stream had become wedged in the blocks making a small dam which had banked up the water to such an extent that in the last month at least a dozen motorists had been stuck in the splash. The motion was carried.
