PROPOSALS FOR MERGER (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) MONTREAL, 14th January. An amalgamation in a fifty million dollar corporation of the respective telegraph systems of the Canadian. Pacific and Canadian National Railways is being considered by the two parties. The Canadian Press understands that the proposal has also been put before the Dominion Government. This is the much larger idea behind the recent Ottawa statement by Sir Basil Blackett, chairman of Imperial and International Communication, Limited, “that the Canadian Pacific and Canadian National shall become partners with Imperial and International Communications in forming a Canadian and overseas communication company which shall include the Canadian, Marconi Company.”

A careful examination bv technical officers of the Canadian National Railways and consideration by the hoard of directors in consultation with the Canadian Government, will precede any announcement by tlie president. Sir Henry Thornton, on the attitude of that company toward the amalgamation of the commercial telegraph systems of the Canadian National and the Canadian Pacific. He admitted to-day that amalgamation was under consideration in connection with the proposed merging of the Canadian wireless and cable systems into a single system.
