OVERCOME BY FOUL AIR
FALL DOWN A SHAFT PLUCKY RESCUE EFFECTED (By Telegraph—Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, This Day. Overcome by foul air in an 80ft deep valve shaft in a coi£ wall at Mangamahoe dam, a workman, 11. J. Briggs, fell 20 to 25 feet to the bottom of the shaft, and was rescued with great difficulty. He descended the shaft on handspikes to attend to a leaking valve. When over 20 feet from the bottom he was overcome by gases and fell to the bottom, injuring one hand on the way, but miraculously escaping serious harm. The injured man was heard groaning in the snaft, and a workman named McKenzie volunteered to go down to the rescue. He himself was almost overcome. McKenzie found Briggs unconscious and the two men were brought to the surface where thev soon recovered.
The shaft is in the core wall of the dam being built to extend the New Plymouth power scheme.
