HOARDINGS GO

VICTORIAN EXAMPLE Proprietors of advertising hoardings near State highways in Victoria were compelled to remove them by the j .id of December. Thus, Victoria has established the lead in Australia for preservation of the natural appeal of the countryside. The by-law under which this order has been issued was challenged but has been upheld by the State Full Court and ;i.e High Court, and the board intends to enforce it strongly. The Country Roads Board declared in its annual report tabled in Parliament on 17th December, that many advertisers have supported it in the enforcement of the by-law. Not only do the advertisements mar the beauty of the landscapes, but, the board declares, also obscure the danger signs which are steadily being extended throughout ihe State.

It is noteworthy that in England ihe Shell Company undertook a special advertising campaign in support of the abolition of hoardings from the roadside and it itself refrained from mailing further use of them.

A boycott against firms that “defile the countryside with hideous posters” was in November advocated by the Gothenburg branch of the Royal Swed ish Automobile Club.
