PIRATE DRAMA

OFF COAST OF CHINA

(United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright)

HONGKONG, 4th Januaiy. British merchant ships played a part in a pirate drama north of Bias Bay where pirate junks were attacking other junks. The steamers Hangchang and Soochow joined forces and manoeuvred, rounding up the pirates, meanwhile wirelessing for assistance. 11.M.5. Somme arrived, arresting twelve pirates who are now en route to Hongkong. Captain Kelman, of the Hangchang, states that he heard firing and cries to save life when near the junks. Thereupon he gave chase, threatening to ram the junks, which frantically endeavoured to escape. The Hangchang assisted, the steamers encircling their prey until the arrival of the warship. There were no casualties.
