GIVEN A CHANCE
A YOUNG MAN'S LAPSE \Mr Talicraph—Pren AwooUtioa) PALMERSTON N,., This Day. "It must be recognised this is a rather serious offence, in that it was premeditated. Accused made a false pretence, then carried it out. It was certainly strange, for he had money in his possession. I trust, however, he has learnt a lesson. I am "going to give him a chanoe>." These remarks were mado by Mr Stout, S.M., when a young man, aged 22 years, appeared charged with false pretences. He was convicted and admitted to probation for two years. An order forbidding the publication of his name was also entered. Accused telephoned a local firm giving the name of a- well-known medical man, authorising the sale of goods to himself as the doctor's nephew. Later ho entered the shop ancl obtained the goods, whereupon he was arrested. The police stated it was diffiAilt to understand the reason of tha offence, as accused had means.
Accused's counsel attributed the lapse to fits of depression duo to influenza.
