THEFTS ON RAILWAYS.

A SMART CAPTURE. [United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, Sunday. Petty thefts from waggons in the Railway yards have occurred from time to time. A shunter named Lawrence (who was formerly in the police force) on. Friday night was in charge of the j-ards, and his suspicions were aroused that a closed van had been tampered with. He thereupon hid under the van. Presently four engine cleaners appeared on the scene. Three of them proceeded to .open -the van, whilst the fourth man remained on watch some distance from the van. The three men got into the van, apparently with the intention of helping themselves, when Lawrence suddenly emerged from his hiding place, and quickly closed and locked the door ,of the van Tho police were communicated with, and the three men were at once arrested. The fourth man escaped. The three men wero brought before the Court yesterday, and were remanded until Wednesday.
