The first batch of draught mules imported from America; and trained at Woolwich for the use of the army, have recently been sent away for duty to Dublin. The experiment of introducing them for army work is regarded as successful. The Washington University at St. Louis Mo., .has received in its hislorygiffca exceeding 1,000,000 dole, besides more than 100,000 dols, received for scholarship endowments. The largest sum credited to one name is 203,000 dole, and the next ia 179,500 r d,ols. A Sydney telegram Bays :— The libel action, Lottie Wilmott v. the publishers of the "Town and Country Journal," has been heard in the Supreme Court. The alleged libel was to the effect that Lottie Wilmott and Chiniquy went shares in the "spoils" of. their lectures. A verdict was returned for the plaintiff for £150. A distinguished Austrian painter recently exhibited at the Kunstlerhaus an historical picture in which was seen a very fine head of an old man. Shortly afterwards a myst eri ous personage called on the artist and desired to know the liame and address of the model who had served him for that splendidly-exe-cuted head. After some explanation the painter gave the desired information, and the police forthwith proceeded to the lodgings of this strikingly handsome old man. In his portrait the detective had recognised a dangerous criminal, who had some time before escaped from prison. The workmen at' the Weka Pass have come across some remarkably fine specimens of moa bones in 12 feet of clay. These relics have been sent to the Museum, and are said to be the largest yet found in New Zealand. A perfect specimen of a fossil fish has also been found in a rock cutting at Pigeon Bock.
