Cookto'wn, Wednesday. The Eastern Australian Mail Company's steamship Normanby has arrived from Singapore with the Torres Straits mail. She brings the following items of eastern news:— The Chinese preparations for war with Russia continue unabated. The Prince, King, and Viceroy of Kansu still maintain their ascendancy, and there is reason to believe the warlike feeling 'is undiminished at Peking Six thousand French troops will occupy Tonquin in Cochin China, in September. Piracy is rife at the present time in Chinese waters. Mblboukke, Wednesday. Arrived— Arawata, from the Bluff. New Zealand oats, 2s 7d to 2s 8d with a firm and active demand. Murray Kavern, charged with the embezzlement of moneys of the Bank of New Zealand at Mareon, has been remanded for extradition. Mauritius, July 26. There is no shipping for Australia. Sugars are arriving slowly from the plantations.
