Dunedin, Wednesday night. £7 A fearful tragedy occured last night at the Kyeburn diggings, Mrs Young, a highly
respected elderly widow, who was living ! alone in a hut, with aome Chinese miners living in close proximity, was found brutally maltreated, and died this afternoon. She was conscious for a few minutes only. Great distress is felt throughout the district. Robbery appears to have been the motive, as the contents of the deceased's purse were taken, together with her watch and trinkets. The house had been broken in with stones, two of which were found inside marked with blood. The murdered womau was m good circumstances, and was universally respected. Thursday. Messrs Cargill's wool cable dated 3rd inst says: — " Market dull without any demand. The next series but one commences on November 23." The Education Board have adopted a scale of education salaries ranging from 7>J to 10 per ceut lower, to take effect immediately. Eliza Martin, who was accidentally shot by her sou at Mullocky Gully, died in the Hospital this afternoon. Napier, Thursday. Bartzatsky, a sunmaker, was to-day charged at the R M. Court with a breach of the Arms Act in selling a large quantity of ammunition without a permit. He was remanded pending the preferment of other charges of selling to the natives. Picton, Thursday. A land slip on the face of one of the hills abutting on to Picton haibor has revealed a 14 feet s-am of good merchantable brown coal, which when tested proves of fair steamiug qualities. Wellington, Thursday. A young man named John Blair, formerly a clerk at Timaru, was arrested this morning on a charge of embezzling £5 15b the mouey of the Government. He was remanded for a week. Christchurch, Thursday. Two Dew seams of coal have been discovered at the Malvern Hills, 9 feet and 3 feet thick respectively. The weather has lately been more seasonable, aud reports from the agricultural districts are very favorable. Napier, Thursday. The prisoner Hewson who, at the last criminal sessions was sentenced to two ytars and twenty- five lashes, received his Hogging yesterday. The operation was performed' privately, and the geueral impression is that the whipping was a farce. The man who wielded the cat was allowed to disguise himBelf by blackiug his face, and it is thought that, the whole thing was carried out to the complete satisfaction of the prisoner. At the Gas Company's annual meeting today, a dividend was declared equal to 12£ per ceut, and £928 was carried to the reserve fund.
