The Nelson Evening Mail. MONDAY, JUNE 21, 1880.
A correspondent .telegraphs to us from Wellingtpti,as follo,\ys:— Tlio Civil Service Commissioners' report has been laid before Parliament.., The railway dej artment is the only one in Nelson specially mentioned. The report says:— "ln Nelson we. found a gentleman in receipt of £425 a year as manager of a railway on which. only two trains a day are running, whilst neither the keepers of the permanent, way nor the engineers in a rootless workshop appear to have taken or required any instructions from , him. . Iv the same city we found a railway storekeeper receiving £160 a year, but who had no stores .and no office. We believe that the supposed . duties of both these gentlemen might be advantageously added to the exceedingly small demands made on the energies of the Nelson station niaster, who should be a man of
aufficient intelligence and; experience to be entrusted with the general control of that shcrfc line with its very small traffic." The report^ we understand, is not yet completed, a large number of tfie departments not hav-i ing been dealt with yet. . *■ , An advertisement appears elsewhere calling a meeting of the residents in the Waimea at the Spring Jrove school room on Thursday evening next, for the purpose of protesting against the heavy burden of taxation with which they are threatened. It is said that among other subjects, that of consiJeriog the expediency of petitioning Parliament to restore Provincial institutions even if coufiqeel to Nelson only will be introduced. We understand that the business known as Messrs IST. Edwards & Co. at Blenheim has been purchased by Messrs Sharp and Pickering of (his town. The name of the firm will bo altered to that of the purchasers, but, in o her respects, the business will remain on the same footing as at present. Mr Pickering will remove to Blenheim and take the management. Weare glad to learn that the voting for . the Takaka tramway has resulted in favor of the work being proceeded with "by a largo majority, the numbers being : — For, 105 ; Against., 31. ' • ' < . - The anuual meeting of the Artillery Company will be held at the Nelson Hotel this- . evening at half-past seven. . . The lea meeting in connection with the anniversary of the Hardy- street Wesleyau Church will take place this evening at six o'clock, and will be, followed by a public "meeting. cane against Mr Websjer, in whip} 1 the Corporation sued for his share of concreting the path in front of his premises, was calledat the Magistrate's- Court ;this morning b.u^ •<- --adjourned. \~\ ■" ; ! ■ ". '■'' TO ■,) . -\ ij As there appears to be J some mitfunder- 1 .standing as to the method adopted in summoning aspecial jury in a criminal case, w§ ma}- state that ir, is different to the course pursued in a civil case. In the latter the Grand Jury list is taken, ai;d • each side strikes off so many until the; list is reduced to 24, who are then summoned. In a criminal action the names of the Grand Jury are placed in a box, and the Sheriff draws3G. These are summoued, and the prosecution and defendant are at liberty to challenge in the same way as with a petty jury.
