[PRfc'Bß AGENOT.] Bldff, Tuesday night. The first attempt to float the Ann Gambles was made to-day, but was unsuccessful. The centrifugal pump was kept going over the 'tween decks for two hours. After tho tide flowed the vessel became lively and everything seemed likely for the floating to be successful, when the tank shunted below and the water poured in. The Stella attended to assist in towing her oS. Another attempt will be made when the tide makes. Arrived— Whaler Celestial, after a two months' cruise, with no oil. Wellington, Tuesday night. At tbe Municipal Conference to-day it was carried that the Legislatures should furnish increased facilities for municipalities raising ! loans for \vork3 and improvements. That the Goldfields Act be amended so as to accord with the new provisions passed by the Conference in reference to streets in boroughs within goldfields. That the powers of Borough Councils be extended so as to include the sale of streets no longer required for public use, proper provision being made for private rights, also that the Councils have power to purchase land with tbe view of constructing new streets. Christchurch, Wednesdaay. A very influentially signed requisition has been presented to the Mayor, asking him to convene a public meeting for the purpose of discussing the question of urging on the Government the desirability of opening up railway communication between Canterbury and the West Coast, with the least possible delay.
