FOOTBALL MATCH.
The Wellington football team arrived by the Wellington this morning, and were met ou the wharf by several of the Nelson players, who had a, coach and four ready to convey their friends to town. Shortly after two o'clock this afternoon the two teams were conveyed by coach from the Masonic Hotel to the Botanical Reserve, and the play soon commenced. The names of the players are as follows:— Wellington: Compbell,baek ; Davy and Taylor, half-backs; Welsh and Berry, quarter-backs ; Cowie, Galbraith, Cooper, Burns, 11. Pollen, C. Pollen, Churton,
Hickson Wright^ and .toefcefcf, forwards. £elsoni .C. Hodgson, back; Askew and Firth, Balf-bacKs; Clonston, Walker, and Vicfcerman, quarter-backs; Barnett, Burnett, H. Hodgson, Jennings, Curtis, Haycock, Kingswell, btafford, and Wells, forwards. It 'was arranged that the match should consist of four half hours' play., hr.viug won the toss selected the western goal with tfre s^j benind them. In the secona bout the Nelson men obtained the advantage at first and soon had the ball down to their opponents' goal within 20 or 30 yards of which an incessant scrimmage was carried on for at least a quarter of an hour* during which time the spectators never had ah opportunity of Seeing the ball. At length 1 one pi the Wellington men got hold of it and made^a splendid run to within 30 yards of the Nelson goal, where repeated scrimmages again took place until time was called, neither side having yet scored. After a short spell play was resumed, Nelson once more having the sun in their eyes, and an uphill game— in a double sense— to play The superior weight of tile Wellington men wiis beginning to tell, and after a game struggle a touch down was obtained by C. Pollen, off which Taylor secured a goal by 21 well directed kick. This was followed shortly afterwards by another try, but this time the goal was missed, the ball passing just below the string.
