The Nelson Evening Mail. SATURDAY, JULY 20, 1878.
At a meeting of the Fire Brigade last night.Mrßrighten's resignation as Treasurer was received. For ten years he has been a member of the Brigade, and for fonr years treasurer. A vote of thanks to him for his past services was unanimously patt, &ud Mr M'Conkey was elected in his place. A laeue parly of the numerous friends of Mr Chattock met him in Mr Smith's large room, on Wednesday evening, for the purposes of bidding him good-bye prior to his leaving the district. A handsome gold albert guard was presented to him as a slight token of the esteem that he was held in the district, and a pleasant evening was spent, interspersed with speeches and songs. Mi- Chattock has held the appointment as schoolmaster at Wakefield for about twelve years, and many of his pupils will have occasion to look back with gratitude to the careful and efficient training that they .have received from him during that time". He leaves this district to take charge of a larger school at Reef ton. The new bye-laws under the " Slaughterhouses Act " are now gazetted, and licenses will have to be taken out by the butchers as provided by them. Mr Budden advertises that he has on sale collections of garden seeds suited to gardens of all sizes. These seeds, some of which are flower and some vegetable, are neatly done up in small paper parcels, and the whole packed in strong and useful boxes, which may be forwarded to any distance. The idea is an excellent one, and when once it is known that such large varieties of seeds are so easily obtainable, Mr Budden is likely to receive numerous orders. The agent for the " Royal Marionettes," who are now performing iv Wellington with great success, arrived here to-day, and announces that that Company will appear iv the Theatre Royal about the 30th instant. Mr. HrjßSTnousE, M.H..*. , invites the electors of Motueka to meet him prior to his proceeding to Wellington. It is an excellent plan that Mr Hursthouse has adopted, as he will then be able to ascertain the views of his constituents on all matters affecting the district. The Express is to be credited with the following neat way of announcing that there has been a heavy flood in Blenheim :— " The dinner to W. F. Hull, Esq., was postponed for the present owing to the effusion of water on Mr Penney's premises consequent upon the hei.vy rains of Sunday and Monday, which rendered it a matter of extreme difficulty to do justice to the occasion." The most delicious dainties are regarded with indifference when the natural sauce piquante, appetite, is wanting. Eating, with those who are never hungry, is a mere mechanical performance not a source of enjoyment. Such persons are, therefore, greatly to be commiserated. They seldom or never '.enjoy vigorous health, usually suffering fron a want of tone and imper feet digestion. This want may, however, be amply supplied by that splendid appetizer Udolpiio Wolfe's Schiedam Akomatic Schnapps. — Advt.
