APENDIX A.
Letter from the Secretary of the Town Committee. _ a Nelso'n, July 3rd; 1878. The Secretary of the District Board of Education, Nelson. Sir.,— l am requested by the Town Committee to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the Bth of June IS7s/ containing suggestions of the District Board respecting the re-organization of the First Division of Bridge St. School, and to lay before you the result of their deliberations. The ToWti Committee aire ndt satisfied that all the schools of the city should be upon the same level ; they are of opinion that one division should afford opportunities for more advauced teaching than is possible in the ordinary schools ; and that the first division of Bridge St. School offers the best arrangements for it. : To make clear what the Town Committee desire, tbey would observe that among the subjects prescribed for public schools iu the Act of 1877, the following for example are mentioned, namely: history, arithmetic, and elementary science. These subjects admit of all grades of treatment; elementary science admits parts of Euclid, algebra, and such books as Huxley's Scientific Primers. It ia within the terms of the Act that the above subjects, as well as ofciiers, should be taught in one special division, to a more advanced stage than in other divisions, without additional fee s from the pupils. The Committee recommend this to be carried out in the First Division of Bridge-street School. The Committee are of opinion that the suggestion of the District Board will not answer their purpose. They therefore recommend that the second, and third divisions remain under one master as at present, with an assistant, and that a master be appointed to the First Division competent to instruct pnpils in this more advanced stage. The object haa long;occupiedthe attention of the Town Committee— both as at present, and formerly constituted— aud they earnestly pr3ss upon the District Boar&the advantages that will accrue to the city and neighborhood from the adoption of the plan they now recommend, and in which they desire the cordial co-operation of the District Board.
I have the honor to be, Sir, Your obedient servant, H. D. Jackson, Secretary to Town Committee Education
