EDUCATION BOARD.
The Board met yesterday. Present— The Bishop of Nelson, Messrs Barnicoat, Campbell, Wastney, Malcolm, Dencker, Shephard and Rout.
The minutes of the last meeting were read and coofirmed.
The report of the Works and Finance Committee was read and adopted, the various matters considered being as follows: 1 That Messrs Tilbrook and Mirfin's reduced account for printing in the "Inangahua Herald" £12 15s be paid, the Secretary being instructed to apply to the proprietors of the "Westport Times" and the "Charleston Herald " for a like reduction of their claims. 2. That £4 additional be allowed Merrick and party for extra work in filling up the ditch in Vincent-etreet.
3. That Mr Akersten be authorised to get the stones cleared from the upper portion of the school ground in Toi-Toi Valley. 4. That Mr Evans* offer of £10 for the unoccupied house in Pangatotara be accepted 5. That £6 S oa be offered for a pump and well cover at Lower Wakefield.
6. That the Secretary be instructed to ascertain from the different Banks in Nelson upon what terms they will undertake the Board's bank account.
7. That Mr A. Brown's tender of £789 163 for building the girls' school in Toi-Toi Valley, to include a slate roof, be accepted, as being the lowest of five tenders.
8. That Mr John Scott be authorised to prepare duplicate plans of a school house in Reefton, the design being the same as that adopted for Toi-Toi Valley school-house with the exception of the walls being a foot higher.
9. That £100 be allowed for clearing and levelling the site for a school-room at Reeftou.
A letter was read from Mr W. Price, master of the Ist Division of Bridge-street School, calling in question the legality of the Board's proceedings in giving him notice of dismissal.
A letter having been read from the Town Committee (Appendix A) referriug to the question of reorganising the Bridge-street schools, it was resolved, That a " Master for the first division of the Town Schools " be advertised for, the salary to be £300 per annum. Applications to be sent in until August 31.
Resolved, That an assistant master for the 3rd Division of Bridge-street School be advertised for. Salary, £120 per annum without head-money. Applications to be sent in not later than July 29.
Resolved, That Mr and Miss Chattock be appointed respectively as master and assistant at lleefton, their duties to begin as early aa possible.
Resolved, That Mr and. Mrs Desaunais, at present acting as master and assistant at Neudorf, be removed to Lower Wakefleld as soon as that school is vacated by Mr Chattock.

Resolved, That an assistant at Spring grove and an assistant at the 2nd division of Hardy-atreet girls' school be advertised for, applications to be sent in until July 29th. Resolved, That a subsidy be granted to a school at Pakawau.
Resolved, That no further action be taken in the matter of amalgamating Hope and Ranzau, and Spring Grove and liiver Terrace schools.
The proposition to allow the master of Karamea schools £25 for travelling expenses was not entertained, but it was resolved, That £15 be allowed him, in consideration of the Board's having failed to provide him with a suitable house on his taking office there.
Resolved, That £4 be allowed to Merrick and party for extra work in filling up a ditch. The Secretary was instructed to apply to the several school committees for an estimate in detail of their probable requirements during the current financial year, to be sent in not later than July 18th. Resolved, That a proposition from the Lower Moutere Committee to alter the v boundaries of that district be referred to the Ngatimoti and Pangatotara Committees, with a view to the Board obtaining their I opinion on the matter. • ? \ 'i An application for an assistant at Foxhill was referred to the Inspector, who was to report on the matter at next meeting. The Inspector's detailed report on the schools was laid before the Hoard and ordered to be printed, together with the table of statistics attached. A letter to the Chairman of the Board from Mr R. Hursthouse, M.11.11., was read, asking for an opiuion as to Ihe proper interpretation of Clause 05 of the Education Act, 1877. The Secretary was instructed to refer Mr, Hursthouse to his, solicitor for, any legal opinion that he might require. That the salary of the master at Dovedale be increased from £100 to .£l2O per annum. 2. That £7 be allowed for tank and spouting at Riwaka. 3. That steps be taken to establish a High School in Motueka. 4. That a grant be made for teaching music in the schools, In compliance with the requirements of the Education Act;
