A girl named O'Meara was severely burned to-day through another child throwing lighted matches on her, which ignited her clothes. It is feared that her injuries are fatal. Wellington, Thursday. In consequence of jthe Post's version of the circumstances attending the disappearance of Mr Alexander Reid from the Taupo, Mr Eugene O'Connor writes to the Times protesting against the conclusion that his death was premeditated by himself, or that he jumped overboard in a fit of despondency. He says that Mr Reid him in the train from Christchurch to Lyttelton and that afterwards in the steamer they had much familiar conversation. Mr Reid was iu excellent spirits and spoke with pleasant anticipation of soon meeting his brother and other relations at Auckland. He feels assured that if Mr Reid fell overboard his death was not of his own seeking. Riverton, Thursday. A large fire occurred here early this morning. Chapman's bookseller's shop, Roger's tailor shop, Robertson Brothers drapery establishment, Wilson and Cocher's store, Clod's Old Royal Hotel, Henderson's saddlery" shop, and the old Western. Star printing office, but fortunately the propiietors of the latter place had removed to new premises a week ago. Wilson, Cocher, and Robertson Brothers are the heaviest losers, but the amount of the insurance is not yet ascertained. Christchdrcii, Thursday. The entries for the Canterbury rams and ewes fare, rams 235, ewes 2301. Yesterday at the Wesleyan Anniversary service, Dr G. Smith the representative of the British Conference was present, and received an address of welcome. The receipts at yesterday's and Sunday's services exceeded £900. Further enquiries show the insurrance of the late fire to be Union £600 on the building, and Victoria £400 on the furniture.
