The Nelson Evening Mail. THURSDAY, MARCH 7, 1878.

The election of the new Education Board, consisting of niue members, was brought to a close this afternoon. The result of the voting by the Local Committees was as follows:—Barnicoat 23, Shephard 17, Bishop of Nelson 15, Dencker H, Wastney 12, Campbell 12, Jackson 10, Atkinson 9, Rev J. Leighton 9, Malcolm 9, Parker 9, Rout 9, Tarrant 9, Catley 6, F«ll 6, Pattie 5, Fairball 3, Oliver 3, Alfred Harley 2, Joseph Andrews 1, Condell 1, Drummond 1, Jabez Hill 1. The first seven having a clear majority were declared elected, and it theu devolved on the old Board before retiring to elect two out of the five ties, Mr Atkinson having withdrawn. The result was as follows:—Malcolm 11, Rout 10, Her J. Leighton 9. The Board therefore will now consist of Mr Barnicoat, the Bishop of Nelson, , Messrs Shephard, Campbell, Dencker, H. D. Jackson, Wastney, Malcolm, and Rout. Mr. Bakwett, of Suburban North, wishes us to rectify an omission in the published prize list at late Horticultural Show, he having obtained an extra prize for the best flavored roek melon, which was not mentioned. A cricket match played at Wakefleld on Saturday last between the Motueka Valley and Central Wakefield Clubs terminated in a draw, there not being time to fioish the game. The Valley men made 68 and 42, and their opponents 76 in the first innings and 13 in the lecond with the loss of aix wicketa. An address will be delivered to the Loyal Marine Lodge, 1.0.G.T., this evening by the first W.V.T. of the Nelson district. Mr. Knight, of Appltby, met with a serious mishap yesterday. It appears that he was in his farmyard when he was saragely attacked by a boar that was running loose there. The brute ran at him, and knocked him down and then ripped him, inflicting two severe wounds on the thigh, one of then being in clone proximity to the femoral artery. Dr. Squires was sent for from town, and dressed the wounds, and from him we learn that the patient is progressing favorably. Professor Hennickh and Madame Stella gave another capital performance last evening to a large audience, whom they delighted by the clever execution of their various tricks. They will give another entertainment to-night with several new items in the programme. An important question and its answer. What is the best means of fortifying the system against influences prejudical to health, such as bad air, unwholesome water, sudden changes of temperature, iutense cold or heat? the rational answer is— by sustaining and increasing the constitutional and physical strength, and thus endowing nature with the capacity to resist the influences referred to.
