INTERPROVINCIAL REGATTA.
Wangandi, Tuesday. Champion Sculls— two miles; £20 —W. Hearn 1, T. Taylor 2, H. Floyd 3. J. Walker and 11. Houldch nowhere. This race proved a gift for Hearn, for, pulling in splendid style, he spurted in a winner by six lengths. Taylor pushed him hard for the greater part of the distance. The rest had no chance. Champion Whaleboat Race — four miles ; £35— Union Club's Danger, James (bow), Clansey, Brough, M'Donough Spurdley (stroke), 1 ; Mr T. Bushes Cutty Sark, Shaw (bow), Beauchamp, Carlisle. Mitchell, Dranefield (stroke), 2. The Wellington Dolly Varden's crew pulled the Nelson boat Shamrock, hut not being up to time for starting, tbe others were sent away, the Shamrock joiuing the race when the boats passed their shed, and came in second in the race. The Lyttelton crew pulled a locally built boat called the Elvira, and led for," the first mile, pulling a splendid stroke, but their steerer took them inside the post marking off the course. The crew turned back and started again, but had lost so much grouud as to spoil their chance. The winning crew all belong to Wanganui, and pulled a good steady stroke throughout, being steered as straight as possible. Great disappointment was felt at the mishap to the Elvira, as her chance was thought by far the best. Senior Four-oared Inrigged Gig Race — three miles ; first prize £s#, second £5 — Wellington Club's Transit (Hearn, M'Grath, Walker, and Woods, stroke), 1 ; Union Club's Maiden (Spinde, M'Dow, Brough, and Clanckey, stroke), 2 ; Wanganui Club's Water Lily (Duncan, Hollish, Wheeler, stroke), 3 ; Canterbury Club's Canterbury Tooks, Mating, Ollivier, Lowauge, (stroke), 4. Won by four lengths easily. There was a hard-fought race for second honors between the two local clubs. The Canterbury crew was beaten off. The whole day's sport was most successful, and even a greater success is anticipated for the next day, when a keen contest is expected between the Canterbury crews and the Wellington crew for the champion outrigger race. The Wellington excursionists arrived in time to see the last race. It is estimated that between three and four thousand people were on the river bank during the races. Wednesday. The Champion Four-oar Cu trigger Race was won by the Lyttelton boat. The Dolly Varden was three lengths, and the Christchurch boat teu lengths behind. It was a splendid race.
