The Nelson Evening Mail. WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 1878.

Mr. Higginsox, the Government engineer, has recently visited Nelson to make certain enquiries respecting the Port extensiou of. the railway. Some few alterations, we 1 understand, will be made in the plans, the line being taken somewhat nearer to the road in places, in order to reduce the amount of filling up. Mr Iliggingson returned to Wellington by the steamer yesterday, and as soou as the new specifications have been prepared tenders will be invited for the construction i of the work. We are given to understand that it was suggested to Mr Higginson, and that he expressed approval of the idea, to carry a branch line from a point near the Saltwater Bridge to Trafalgar-street North, striking the street at the rear of the old Wakatu premises. Such a work would be of great advantage to the town, aud both the goods aud passenger traffic on the railway would be largely increased. We are informed that steps will be takeu to bring the matter more prominently before the Government. Elsewueke will be found a report of a test case tried iv the Magistrates' Conrt today, iv which the Waimea Road Board sought to enforce an order to clear gorse from the roads. Judgment, as will be seen, was given agaiust the Board. A match between the City and Stoke Rides, ten on each side, took place at Stoke to-day, and resulted in a victory for the latter by 65 points, the scores being: — Stoke, 412; City Kifies, _ 47. The ranges were 200, 4UO, and GOO yards, five snots at each range. Target at 2uo yards, 6ft x 2ft with Bin bull's eye, and at _U0 and 60>) yards, 6 ft _ 6ft with bull's eye 2ft square. The highest individual score was made hy Lieutenant Payuter, who scored 48 out of a possible 60. Mr. Clapcott, the chief agent for the Government Life Insurance, delivered a lecture last evening in .the school-room, Richmond, and sve were glad to see that our Richmond friends seemed to be alive to the benefit arising from Life Insurance for the room was crammed, and many stood within hearing distance outside the building, and their applause came as a kind of echo to the frequent applause of those inside. The lecture was a most inter- ; csting, amusing, and to our minds also, convincing one, and the Government are to be congratulated on having so able an agent. The ladies, Mr Clapcott said, were those he had the greatest dilliculty with in the matter of life assurance, their chief objection being, as one of them expressed it, that should her lord insure his life aud the premium unhappily become payable, she should always feel £s though she was eating and drinkiug j

her John. After the lecture Mr Clapcott gave some excellent readings. The proceedings terminated with.'a vote of thanks to the lecturer, and to Mr Barnicoat, the chairman. Mr. Hodder retiring from the firm, T R. Hodder and Co., have decided to relinquish the Trafalgar House business, and to reduce the stocks in their general stores at Richmond and Spring Grove. To effect this they will offer immediately the whole of their varied stocks at very greatly reduced prices. This sale is exclusively for cash. — [Advt. J An attempt to rob the sick of a means of cure is nothing less than a crime. Many such attempts have been made by clothing inflammatory nostrums with imitations of the labels, style of bottle etc., of the most genial tonic and active remedy for derangements of the stomach, liver, howels, and breathing organs ever prescribed by the faculty and used by the public. But neither trickery nor competition has been able to affect the reputation of the medicine referred to, Udolpiio Wolfe's Schiedam Aromatic Schnapps. — Advt.
