COLLEGE SPORTS.

The annual sports took place in the College Grounds yesterday afternoon, when, as usual, there was a good attendance of visitors. Most of the events were closely contested, and afforded a good deal of sport to the onlookers. The two which excited the greatest amount of interest were the vaulting with the pole, open to all comers, and the half mile race. la the former the competition was very keen, Harle, one of the College boys, running Edward Arnold, who is generally re garded as the champion of the district, very close indeed. At the last leap Arnold unfortunately met with a nasty accident, as he caught in the rope, and pulled down the two uprights, both of which struck him in their fall, one inflicting an ugly scalp wound, which bled very freely, Fortunately Dr Kestevan was on the ground and attended to the wounded man, who was very anxious to proceed with the contest, but Harle, rather than allow him to continue, at once gave in, and allowed him to have scored the 10ft leap, which there was every probability of his accomplishing. In the half mile irace a considerable amount of interest centred, as upon it depsnded the destination of the coveted prize, the Cup. A very pretty race between Richmond, M'Kellar, and Askew was cleverly won by the former, the three coming in in the order named. Sichtnond was then for the second year in succession the winner of the Gup. j Afc fche^ close of the sports the prizes were distributed by Mrs Andrew, for whom, for the ladies who had graced the field with their presence, and for the masters and Q-overnors, hearty cheers were given. t The following is the prize list: — Throwing the cricket ball : open to school — Cole (75|yds) 1 Bout ... • ... 2 Eight entries.
