CITY COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the City Council was held last night. ' Present, all the members except Crs Pickering and'f. Harley. Letters, were read as follows:— From Mr A. Anderson, asking permission to erect a glue factory at the upper end of Toi-Toi Valle y: per mision granted; from Mr Good rich complaining of a nuisance on Mr Cook's premises in the Wood: referred to the Inspector; from Mr G. W. Lightband calling attention to the dangerous state of the footpath near his residence in Nile-street; referred to the Public Works Committee; from Mr Burford asking if the Council would take any more Croixelles gravel at 7s per yard. Resolved that it should not be taken. The Town Clerk also read a letter addressed hy him to Mr George of WelUngton; asking him if he could come over and inspect the gasworks. The report of the Finance Committee recommended that the Banks shonld be invited to tender for— (1) rate of interest on overdraft (if required) to an amount not exceeding ,£200o; (2) rate of interest "on daily credit balance of Borough Fund account; (3)- rate of eicnange throughout New Zealand. Tenders, to be v serif inlby the 27th inst, and arrangements to commence from : Ist of May., ['.. c\ ][ ;■ -The report' also recommended- that Mr Rout, having made ihe late valuation in so Tatfifactory a manner, be appointed valuer for* the next, year at the same remuneration. :The report was adopted. j. The {report of tha City Surveyor dhowed that 384,140 cubic feet of gaa had beian ob- >. tained the.montU front 43 tons .5 cwt '$ qrs of coal,. The quantity consumed waa: consumers' meters 292,600 feet,' street lamps 33,000 feet, showing a loss by leakage, &c, of 58,1^0 feet, which was about 15 per cent less than the previous month. The report further recommended that flat stones for covering drains, should be obtained from a quaray about six miles up the Maitai, also that the extension of the Waimea-street sewer should be constructed by day labor. The following tenders were received for the construction of sea baths:-~J. Gilbertson £346 10s; Bethwaite and Robertson, £385; J. Scott, £550; J. Rule, £560. Mr Gilbertson's tender was accepted. The carrying out of the proposed works on the Waimea road .near Snow's Hill was postponed for two months on the motion of Cr Hooper seconded by Cr Waters. Cr Hooper drew attention to the rotten state of the flooring of Nile-street bridge, and Cr J. Harley to the necessity of providing means to allow the surface water to drain off at Collingwood-street bridge. The Council then adjourned.
