HORTICULTURAL SHOW.

The Nelson Horticultural Society's autumn show is being held at the Provincial Hall today, and, despite all the gloomy predictions that have been uttered with regard to it, has proved a very great success in the fruit and vegetable department, and far from a failure so far as flowers are concerned, the exhibits although less numerous than usual, being many of them exceptionally beautiful. This remark applies chiefly to the asters, of which there is a most brilliant display. The bouquets are very tastefully arranged, fand display an amount of floral wealth that could scarcely have been expected at this period of the year, and after so unfavorable a season. The stiow of fruit is simply magnificent! especially the apple 3, which are to be seen in great variety and of enormous size pears and grapes. Of the latter there is a far larger quantity than usual, while with the quality no fault can possibly be found Three small vines in full bearing in pots form a very attractive feature in the show, two •of the plants looking very healthy, and the b2rries luscious and tempting toa degree. The plums are not so numerous or so fiae as usual, but there are some remarkably fine peaches and nectarines, walnuts and cobnuts, melons and medlars. A basket of fruit containing a very large variety, and a glass stand of the same are very prettily arranged, and are evidences of the good taste of those who exhibit them. The Grand Jury Room is as usual devoted to vegetables, of which there is a very fine display especially of tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, carrots, and pumpkins. There are also some enormous cabbages and cauliflowers, a few well grown parsnips, and some fine specimens of green peas and French beans. Mr Wright, one of the judges, exhibits, but not for competition, a beautiful amaryllis in flower for the second time this season, and also two very graceful and beautiful specimens of the British Lady fern. The finest collection of apples is that shown by Mr Wiesenhaven to whom an extra prize has been awarded, his exhibit being debarred from entering for the advertised prize on account of its containing more than one apple of a kind. The thanks of the public are due to Mr H. Adams the Hon. ] becretary, and to Messrs Wright and Hastilow, the judges, for the trouble they have taken in arraugiug the exhibits and awarding the prizes. The show will be open this j evening as usual, and should be largely patronised by those who care to see what the gardens and orchards of Nelson can produce, lhe following ia the prize list:—
