FATAL ACCIDENT.

A sad accident resulting in the death of Mr P. O. Pierce, a clerk in the employ of Messrs H. Davis & Co., occurred near Collingwood on Wednesday evening. The particulars, for which we are indebted to Mr W. Harley, who was with him at the time, are as follows:— The two, Messrs Pierce and Harley, started on horseback from Takaka at half-past three, and Mr Pierce being an iddiiferent horseman they rode at a walk the whole way as far as Mr Brace's. When opposite bis gate Mr Harley, who was about 200 yards ahead of his companion, suddenly found his horse run up alongside of him, and on looking back he saw Mr Pierce lying on the road. He immediately went towards him, calling out to a man whom he saw on Mr Brace's farm to come to his assistance, and on arriving at the spot where Mr Pierce lay, he found him breathing very heavily and perfectly unconscious. . He was removed to Mr Brace's house where he was put to bed and every attention was paid to him, but he never recovered consciousness, and at three o'clock yesterday morning he breathed his last. The body was conveyed to Collingwood yesterday morning, but at the first public house that w v as reached, that of Mr Bayliss', it was refused admittance, and was taken onto the Miners' Arms, where an inquest was held before F. Guinness, Esq., the coroner, and a verdict was returned in accordance with the evidence. The body was brought over in the Lady Barkly this morning, the news having, previous to her arriva', been telegraphed from Motueka. Mr Pierce leaves a widow but no family.
