The Temperance Question. — At the Synod to-morrow the Rev. J. Leighton will move : —-" That in reference to the subject of Temperance, brought before the Synod by the President at the request of the General Synod, this Synod desires to give expression to the folj lowing principies:— (l.) That temperance aud sobriety is an obligation resting upon nil Christians, whereas the like cannot bo affirmed of total abstinence. (2.) That it is desirable i to bring up the young as long as possible in the non use of such beverages as beer and wine, both in private families and on occasions of business. (3.) That in view of the wide prevalence of intemperance, and for the greater encouragement of sobriety, it is desirable that those who are able should adopt the practice of total abstinence. (4.) That in offering refreshments to friends and visitors, the use of nonstimulonls should be recommended in preference to fermented liquors. (5.) That iho frequenting of public houses, except on unavoidable occasions of business, should be discouraged as the source of the greatest part of the evil. (6.) That in the ease of those whose hnbita of self control in tins matter are weakened or lost, it is an absolute Christian duty to abstain entirely. (7.) That this Synod earnestly recommends the immediate and practical adoption of these principles in a quiet and unostentatious manner, rather than the formation of special guilds and societies for the purpose. (8.) That if these or similar principles be affirmed by Synod a circular be drawn up embodying them, inviting the attention of the Diocese to them, and that a sufficient number of such circulars be printed for distribution in the various Parishes and districts; and the name 9of those families or individuals willing to carry them out be invited, and a register of them kept by Standing Committees." " Widows on the look-out for husbands," observes the Geelovg Advertiser of a recent date, '• ought to be cureful how they part with their household goods before the interesting ceremony is consummated. The practical force of this advice has been somewhat amusingly but very painfully illustrated in the case of a young lady residing at Newtown Hill. Last evening she applied to the police with a truly pitiful tale. Recently she had become iutiraate with a happy swain, who proposed marriage and was accepted. Everything was arranged, and among other preliminaries the intended husband was allowed to prepare a new abode for his bride, and for this purpose obtained poesessioo of the whole of the furniture she inherited from her deceased husband. A day or two ago they were to be married by the registrar, but the faithless swain — who, in the meantime had sold, and, it is believed, swallowed, the furniture — declined the obligation. The members of the police applied to sympathised deeply with the^ unfortunate widow thus deprived of her home, Jbut were only able to suggest as her best course to take logings in the meantime, and summon her intended for the restitution or value of her household goods."
