CENTRAL BOARD OF EDUCATION.
Thursday, January 7. Present — Messrs Barnicoat, Campbell, Burn, Cresswell, Btuke, the Bishop of Nelson, Revs Thorpe, Garin,and Buddie, Messrs. Rout, Wastney, Mercer, Broad. Sbephard, and Smith. A letter from the Provincial Government having been reid, offering an additional monthly payment of £50 for three months, to enable the Board to subsidise several schools on the West Coast, it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Burn, That the Government be thanked for the promptitude >nd liberality with which they have acceded to the wishes of the Board, and that their offer of £50 ptr month be accepted. Resolved on the motion oi Mr Burn, That schools at Granville, Nelson Creek, and the Ka'amea be subsidised, and provided with books and maps gratuitously. i Resolved on the motion of Mr Cresswell J That the offer of Mr C. Brnad to exercise a] general supervision over the Granville] Nelson Creek, and No Town Schools, ba accepted with thanks. \ Resolved on the motion of Mr Cresswell ,\ That the salary of the master of Dovedaiel School be increased from £60 to £100 per annum from Oc'ober 1, 1874. Resolved on the motion of Mr Wastnet, That, in future, a statement of the amount of the gross expenditure sanctioned at each meeting, and of the state of the B ard's Bank Account, be appended to the published minutes. Resolved on the motion of Mr Shephard, That Mr Giliner's offer of 2s per acre rent for No. 58, Totara Fla^ be dclined, but that he be offered No. 58 for 14 year* at a yearly rental of 4s an acre, on condition that he plant and leave a thorn hedge at the end of bis term. Reso'ved, on the motion of Mr Burst, That Mr Jaß Luun's offer t > rept two acres of the Pakawau reserve te accepted. Resolved, on the motion of Mr Shefhard, That the services of a pup 1 teather at Stoke be discontinued, and that the Stoke Committee be authorised to employ an assistant teacher from January 1, at a salary of £2t. A list of subjects for the Examinations for the Provincial Scholarships, drawn up by the Examiners, was adopted with some slight modifications. Resolved, on the motion of Mr Roux, Thnt prizeß for Reading and Reciting be ngain offered by the Board, and that the examiners be appointed, and the programme agreed upon, at next meeting. Resolved, on the motion of Mr Shepherd That a cheque for £10 be drawn next month' in favor of Mr Metcalfe.as a subsidy to his school for the previous quarter The Secretary was instructed to write to the Rev. D. M'Nicoll, of Greymouth, nccepuing the terms upon which he offers to let the chapel at Brunr.erton as a schoolroom. Resolved, on the motion of Mr Rout, That the Secretary write to the Minister of Public Works, to explain to hipq how, the Board is being put to expense and inconvenience by the demoition of the school buildings'. at Brunnerton. , ...... , The Secretary having complained of the
way in which the Board room i 3 continually being used for various purposes unconnected with education, without his leave being asked, he was instructed to apply to the Provincial Government for permission to put a Chubb's lock on the door. A letter from Mr Macmahon having been read by Mr Burn, referring to the closing of the Sunday school at liiwaka, in alleged violation of the conditions of the lease under which the schoolroom is held by the Board, the Secretary was instructed to obtain a copy of the exact words of the lease referred to. Notices of Motion. 1. Mr Mercer : That £5 be allowed to repair the roof of the North Division School, Waimea West. 2. Mr Bbukb: That £10 be allowed to enable the Upper Moutere Committee to line the two rooms lately built at Neudorf . Cheques were passed to the amount of £646 17s. Bank overdraft on January Ist, 1876, £1785 12s 4d. Subjects for Examinations fob Provincial AND GOVBRNOBS' SCHOLARSHIPS, December, 1875. (a) — English History.— From the first Boman invasion to the death of Stephen. The text book used will be Mies Edith Thompson's History, edited by Mr E. A. Freeman, copie9 of which will be supplied to candidates on application to the Secretary to the Central Board. The period selected occupies the first 48 pages of the book. (A)— The first three cantos of "The Lay of the Last Minstrel." — Copies of this poem, with notes, have been sent for from England, and can be supplied to intending candidates about April. (c)— Arithmetic— Colenso's smaller work, and the arithmetics edited by Chambers and Cornwell may be used as text-books. (d)— Writing will be judged by the history paper.
