FaiDATi Sbpxembeb 5. The usual fortnightly meeting was held last evening. All the members were present except Mr Dodscn, jwho was absent through illness. The expeiiditure of £50 npon'Kawhia-etreet was ordered to be postponed until plans had been prepared, and the Public Works Committee directed to examine and report upon the advisability of levelling Brougham-street and Trafalgarstreet, near the old cemetery. ;. • ■ - : A letter'from James Gorrie was read, complaining of the " dirty and stinking hole," commonly called the Frog-pond. On the motion of Mr R.Burn, it was resolved, " That Mr Wither, upon whose land the nuisance was situate, be served with a notice to abate it " A long letter from Dr Williams was read, again" apologizing for being unable yet- to lay his promised report before the Board, and offering eundry suggestions meanwhile. He feared the sewage arrangements at the different town schools were very defective, and recommended a close inspection and inquiry into the system of - drainage and management, of the sewage at the College. He complained greatly of the horribly offensive ditch in Hardy-street, urging that something should be done at once to abate the nui- . sancei : . The Surveyor was ordered to inspect the whole system of sewage and drainage at the College, and report next Board night. On the motion of Mr Hooper, the drain in : -Hardy-street was ordered to Ye cleaned out temporarily, though it was admitted that nothing effectual could be done until the sewer was com- ' pleted, -as' to which the Board was at present .powerless.: The Inspector of Nuisances reported that the sewage arrangements at the Hardy-street schools consisted merely of an enormous cess-pool, which was horrible in the extreme. Notice to abate the nuisance forthwith was orders. d to be served upon the Secretary to this and all other town schools, where any should be found to exist. On the motion of Mr R. Burn, the Secretary was ordered to write to Dr Williams, and urge upon him the necessity of forwarding his report to the Board as Boon as possible. Mr Fell presented a petition from twenty-seven i ratepayers in Collingwood-otreet, praying that

the hollow between Mr J. B. Johnston's house and Manuka-street be filled up. The Public Works Committee were ordered to visit the spot, and report next Board night The Surveyor and Inspector of Nuisances gave a long report of a variety of nuisances which had been inspected since the last meeting of the Board, the abatement of which had been ordered. The parties complained of had apparently cooperated satisfactorily with the officers of the Board. Cheques were signed to the amount of £41 3s 9d, and the Board adjourned.
