REGISTERED LETTERS. To the Editor of the Nelson Evening Mail. Sir, — In my ignorance I imagined that by paying for the registration of letters I should insure their saie delivery, but to my great surprise I find that quite the reverse is the case. Having occasion to transact some business with a person in Auckland, I sent two letters through the post, one of them registered, the other in the ordinary msnner. The latter arrived at its destination, but the former, containing money and postage stamps, appears to be lost, and all the information I can gain frcm the Post Office officials is tfcat it arrived safely in Auckland; but what became of it afterwards they do not appear to know or care. I, for one, was under the impression that the Government was responsible for registered letters, for it seems that nothing is more reasonable to suppose than that they should be so, seeing that an additional sum is charged for them. I hope you will give publicity to the above, as it may serve the purpose of putting people on their guard when sending money through the Post. I am, &c., An Old Subscribes. [We have shown the above complaint to the Postmaster in Ne'son, who, after making telegraphic enquiries on the subject, informs us that the letter referred to lay in the Auckland Post Office for the usual time, and not being applied for, was sent to the Dead Letter Office in Wellington, where our correspondent should apply for it.— Ed. N. E. M.\
