SALISBURY'S- OPEN.
The following report on the quartz reefs in this district has been furnished by Mr. Alexander : — Motueka. April 11, 1872. To Mr. H. A. Tarrant, Chairman of the Table-land Quartz Prospecting Committee. Sir, — I have examined the quartz reefs iv the vicinity of the table-laud, and find that there are four well defined reefs, each cropping out ou the surface iv several places, in some instances the eastern or upper side (they all appear to dip to theeast) which form the side of the hill on which they lie, thus exposing a large surface of stone to view. I have not succeeded io findiug gold in the stone, or in the surface soil near the reefs. The western or under side appears to be solid and compact, with a slate casing, this I could not examine in the short time at my 4 disposal and at so late a period of the year. Some of the stone appears likely to con lain golJ, and on further trial aud actual working, might prove to be auriferous. I should say from the number of specimens aud the rough kind of gold found on these diggings that gold-bearing reefs will at some future time be discovered in the vicinity, but I am not inclined to recommend tbe committee to prosecute the search further at this season of the year. I am, &c, J. Alexander.
