To the Editor of the Nelson Evening Mail. Sir,—Whilst thanking you for: the kind ' manner with which you tried, in your issue ,o£ ' ypsterday, to excuse me for my not being, as you--... said, thoroughly acquainted yet- with the Clause which refers to the reading of the Holy Scripture in schools, I beg to call your attention upon what . - you..perhaps.-did not notice enough, when I stated that "in the country districts one only ■, school is possible; and.il is also impossible without ■>such arrangements as cannot be introduced, without ■ great inconvenience .and expense to withdraw pupils at all sorts of hours. In England, in schools in - which religious instruction is given, there are two rooms, one in'which such an instruction is given;. . and. the other, in which the children who' object,; may retire. But in our colony you will' not ifind ; such, accomodation. Now, take & rainy day j where will the children who object retire to shelter themselves from the pouring rain ? ; Will they stand wet and cold outside? Or will they : not be compelled by necessity to go in arid.hear religious instruction against their will and thai of. their parents ? Same inconvenience after school, the rain may be too heavy for them to go. at. the fixed hour; we all know how often this may be' the case, and.it is what I consider a- great tyranny. . .....■■. I am, yours &c, „',.;; A. M. GrARIN, Nelson, Sept. 12th, 1871. Catholic Priest.
