■'■ ~ i — in" — r_~ ii —a At Skipper's, in the Lake district of Otago, a man named John R. Pasko, a shareholder and director of the Nugget and Cornish Company, was killed while oiling a quartz-crushing machine during the time that it was at work. Deceased was observed to take the oil-feeder and go to the turbine wheel, and in two minutes he was seen revolving between the intermediate shaft and the turbine shaft. He had a comforter round his neck, and the ends hanging down got entangled round the shaft, and he was at once pulled in. The wheel was stopped in half a minute, but the man was quite dead. During tbe time that he was in that dreadful position bis head was continually striking against the shl&ft of the turbins, which was about 18 or 20 inches from the spindle shaft. The body "tyent round some half-dozen times before the machine was stopped, and then it hatjr become so inextricably entangled round the shaft, that the clothes bad to be cut away before the body could be removed. At the inquest, the jury recommended that machinery of that kind should be boarded in whes practicable. With a view to promote newspaper production, the Government of Peru has issued a decree exempting prij&ters from service in the national guardjr
