Mr Gladstone's resolution that ' the Established Church in Ireland should cease to exist, due regard being had to personal and individual rights, was passed at 2 a.m., on the Ist May, by a majority of 330 to 265. The result was received with tremendous cheering. Government has abandoned the Roman Catholic University scheme. Advices from Paris state that the French contingent for 1889 is to he 100000 men. The reserve for the month in the^B^k of Euglaud is £11,500,000. The-Grand Jury have thrown out the bill in the case of ex-Governor Eyre. Mr J. S. Mills has presented a petition to Parliament, enquiring' iuto the cause of the Abyssinian war. Latest advices stated that the Abyssinian captives had arrived ut Suez. Cliief Justice Cockburn has expressed the disseut of himself and the majority of the Judges from the ruling of Mr Justice Blackburne, upon which Governor Eyre was acquitted. The Government intend to demand supplies for the whole year. Russia has proposed a convention abolishing the use of explosive projectiles in war. France has asseuted. Mr Reardon' s motion iu the House of Commons, respecting the Queeu's health and the desirability of her abdication, was iudiguantly rejected. Barrett, the Fenian found guilty* of causing the Clerkenwell explosion, has been hanged. The Alfred Memorial Hospital Committee (Sydney) has met in London, Sir John Young in the chair. The object was to evoke the sympathy of the colonists in London. £700 were subscribed. The prices of wool have advanced through foreign competition. Good wool is a penuy higher ; other qualities one halfpenny. Many sales have been made. The Derby was won by Blue Gown, King Alfred being second, and Speculum third.
