Where is Pawelka?

(To the Editor "Petone Chronicle.")

Sir, —Just at the present time we are repeatedly reading of the excellent work being done by the police depart* inent, and congratulations ftre pouring in upon the. men in blue for their splen* did work in connection with the poof strikers of Waihi. The Premier and Minister of Justice are patting the Commissioner on the back and saying, "Good boys, you are a credit to the Dominion." So strong have these expressions of praise become that every policeman puts out his chest a few inches and regards himself as a hero. There is no doubt they do shine when trying to ride over defenceless Women and men, and for making clever captures When the word "scab" is called out. Would it be regarded as impertinent or out of place to ask the clever police department where Joe Pawelka is ? A prisoner can escape jail, wander round the country, and yet be not found. Scores of policemen were after Pawelka, yet he defied them all. There has been no public account given of the reason by this clever police department for his being still at large. Some people think he is still in New Zealand s and passes the clever policeman every day in his life. Now that the guardians of the peace and the clever Commissioner have covered themselves with glory, they might justify their ability in finding Pawelka. Not that I Went him to be recaptured, but I hate to read of this terrible twaddle of giving praise where praise is not due.—l am, etc., Lower Hutt. CURIOUS.
