An Outrage.
TREATED A3 A CONVICT. HARD LABOR WITH CRIMINALS. This is the testimony of A. Barton, 19 years of age, and a student at the Auckland Technical School, as to how he fared when jailed under tho Defence Act:— "Auckland, Thursday, Aug. 8. "I was summoned j it was withdrawn, but I was ordered to pay costs 7s. Subsequent costs brought it up to 13s. I refused to pay this, and was arrested and committed for 48 hours' imprisonment. "I was marched through the streets to Mt. Eden in the custody of a policeman. "There my finger-prints, weight, height, description, etc, were taken. "I was dressed in prison coat, hat, and boots. "Next day I was stood in a row with other criminals, and MARCHED OFT WITH THE GANC INTO THE QUARRY. "I was givpn a hammer and PUT ON A STONE HEAP, WHERE I WORKED ALL DAY. | "I was liberated next day. "The above is a true statement of what took place. "(Signed) A. BARTON. "(Witnessed) H- F. WISE"
