Cooke to Socialists.
HELP WANTEDI PROJECTS AFOOT. I thank branches for tho honor they have conferred on mc by electing mc to be their secretary. The Socialist work of the present needs militancy, fearlessness and wisdom—and I think the branches could not have chosen a better man for the work than myself. In fact, in my humblo opinion, the comrades are to be congratulated in securing such a secretary. Be that as it may, whenever your secretary took a place with an exploiter he always informed him that if lie was not satisfied with him he was at liberty to chop him off at once—and the same applies in this case. If your secretary does not justify himself in this work you must chop him off as close to the cars as you can get without injuring their beautiful length, and if the work is done all right the branches are trusted to keep their part of tho contract; and all there is to bo said further about it is ''To Hades with the constitution of capitalists and other juniors of the devil!"
The last conference decided that the secretaryship was to be mainly a sitdown and organising job, arranging for the best possible lecturers and propagandists to be engaged and kept moving about the country. This is being done to the best of the party's financial ability, but it is imperative that the secretary should visit the branches also, and as soon as E. R. Hartley's engagement terminates I purpose going south to Timaru, Waimate, Dunedin, and possibly Kaitangata; after that, to the West Coast and then AVellington and north. The work needs care and time—there should be no rush from one place to another.
What we need are the strong militant fighters of the present age, and wo must have them organised specifically to break down the old system and to usher in tho new. Wherever a branch can be started to get the literature, going, etc., it is our work to get that branch started. The workers have been exploited long enough.
I hope these notes will be read by all the Socialists of the Dominion, because I wish to appeal to them. The party is in immediate need of £70 to fulfil its contract with E. It. Hartley. You who sympathise with the work and can afford it send either a sovereign or half-ansovereign AT ONCE. Tho Christchurch comrades are responding to the best of their ability, and we ask others to do the same. The unattached are specially appealed to.
In our future work we are contemplating 20,000 pamphlets for distribution. Tho work done must be followed up. Yve must not leavo the disturbed ground, expecting it to give useful returns. If it is left it will only send forth weeds, but with careful cultivation the fruits of Socialism will shortly be harvested. Progress is going our way. A little more effort and the momentum will havo reached that acceleration which will make it too dangerous for the reactionaries to interfere with; besides, struggle is the elixir cf life and not to respond to the call means coAvardice and deterioration.
Come, ye stalked radishes—with a little more practice we shall be able to stand alone. Rally to tho call- This great movement needs your help. r
F. R. COOKE, Secretary
