UNITY SCHEME CONFERENCE.

A conference of delegates comprising Jho Trades Councils, Labour Party, with other organisations, met to discuss the question of unity. Hon. J. T. Paul presided "over an assemblage ot some seventy delegates. J). Sullivan, of Christchurch, was elected secretary. Moat of th© time the conference sat in committee discussing clause by clause the various items submitted. It was finally resolved that tho nam* of tho party be the United Labour Party. The "objects" agreed upon are as follow :— 1. To promote tho organisation of all the workers of New Zealand in all forms of necessary service; 2. To protect their interests in tho matter of regular, rational, and remunerative employment; 8 To promote their good citizenship and to increase their efficiency; i. To consolidate their political power in their own behalf, and to uso their whole power (both political ' and economic) in negotiations with employers, beforo tho Courts, in municipal, county, and Dominion Governments, in international relations, and (if need be) in industrial revolt; 4. To use the fruits of every partial victory to strengthen and continue this work until tho power to oppress and exploit any of tho workers, either by privaito monopolies controlling tho Government, or through the private monopoly ownership and control of industry, shall utterly disappear, and there shall bo secured for all tho people power to purchase with their income tho total products of their labour—until, in short, tho meaiirf of production, distribution, and exchange (in so far as they constitute in private hands instruments of oppression and exploitation) shall be. socially owned and operated without profit and for tlu common good of all. idembership.—This organisation shall consist of: —(a) Single local unions of workers; (b) National federations of district trades, sendees, and occupations; (c) National groups of federations of distinct trades, services and

occupations; (d) District trades or labour oouncils; (o) Associated societies and individual members. The Executive of the party is as follows:—The Hon. J. T, Paul (president), Messrs. T. O'Byrne, Southland (building trade ■group)- W. A. Veitdh, M.P. (affiliated transport workers, including railuaynien), J. Robortson, M.P, (affiliated agricultural and pastoral workers), J. IVltard (affiliated printing trades), G. It. Whiting, Christchurch (boot, textile and clothing trade), J. A. M'Cullough (aililiated wood and metal workers), E. Trogear (affiliated commercial workers), A. Withy (affiliated professional workers), _..\T. Carey (affiliated food woiloers), J. E. M'Manus (affiliated general workers), D.
